An exciting day out for those who like a challenge
If stand up paddle-boarding on a lake sounds too easy, why not try it on the river?
Paddle boarding was actually invented on the northern Peru coast, around 1100 to 1400BC. Local fisherman would head out into the waves on a floating platform made of reeds. They still use them today. You do not need to have tried it before. We will teach you all you need to know.
You start the day with a full instruction in the art of stand-up paddle boarding, before practicing your new skills on beautiful Lake Urcos, one and a half hours outside Cusco. It is actually really easy to learn and soon you will be gliding serenely across the emerald green lake, all under the watchful eyes of your expert stand up paddle guide.
Enjoy amazed looks from local farmers, spot rare birds in the reeds around the lake and relax, enjoy the quiet and take in the stunning Andean scenery. After learning the basics, you can enjoy a picnic lunch and drive the short distance to the River Urubamba.
Now it is time to try out your newly learned skills on some grade 1 and 2 rapids. This is great fun and you are well looked after by your expert guides. Unlike a kayak, where people worry about getting stuck in the boat if they turn over, on the stand up paddle-board, if you lose your balance all you do is fall down either onto or beside the flat board. So you simply get back on and carry on. There is also the option to sit down on the board if you prefer a bit more stability.
