A great alternative to the short Inca Trail
Deep in the Sacred Valley lies the quiet Inca village of Ollantaytambo. Follow the steep road that leads up into the hills behind and you will be rewarded with sights that few other visitors ever see. The Patacancha valley is one of the last bastions of a culture passed down from generation to generation since the time of the Incas.
Locals clad in red ponchos and colorful felt hats enliven the mute greens and browns of this hidden valley. And for those prepared to hike a little comes the reward of long lost Inca ruins and intricate stone terracing, hidden beneath the stems of swaying corn.
After eventually making your way down to Ollantaytambo you catch the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo for the night. Leaving you in prime position to get up early the next day and explore the wonders of Machu Picchu.
You start with a short drive up this hidden valley, passing colourfully dressed locals on the way. Leaving your vehicle behing you have a short but steep climb up to Puma Marca, a remarkably well preserved and extensive Inca ruin with spectacular views down the valley towards Ollantaytambo.
After some time to explore, you follow an old Inca Trail along the steeply terraced valley down towards Ollantaytambo, where you can enjoy some lunch. You can then explore the old streets of this fascinating town with its narrow cobbled passageways and ever present Inca walls.
Later you catch the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo. After checking into your hotel you have the evening free to explore the extensive artisan market and lively bars and restaurants.
Relaxed after a comfortable night, you head up to Machu Picchu for your full guided tour before the crowds arrive. There is time afterwards to hike to the Inca Bridge, Watchman’s hut or else just wander through the ruins soaking up the atmosphere.
In the afternoon you descend to the waiting train to enjoy one of the great train journeys of the world back towards Cusco.
