High above the Sacred Valley lies a mysterious and little-known Inca city. Your hike to Huchuy Qosqo follows the old Inca trail from Cusco, through remote farming communities and past stunning mountain scenery. If you are looking for a great two-day hike with a night spent under the star-filled Andean sky, far from the crowds, this is a truly spectacular option.
Alternatively, check out our 1-Day Huchuy Qosqo hike here.
You start with a beautiful drive above Cusco to the trailhead of Lake Qoricocha (4,000m/13123ft). Leaving the vehicle behind, you slowly contour to the pass (4,200m/1,3779ft). Marked by large stone towers this is thought to have been the entrance to the Huchuy Cusco Inca Estate.
You then follow a mainly flat and well preserved Inca trail for the rest of the day. This little used route will take you past herds of alpacas and llamas and on a clear day the views to the snow-capped mountains of the Urubamba range are fantastic. Along the way you can enjoy a tasty lunch prepared for you by Alex our cook.
After lunch you descend through a delightful canyon full of Inca remains to emerge high above the Sacred Valley for your first views of Huchuy Qosqo.
Little is known about this mysterious site, though ‘little Cusco’ (as it translates from Quechua) may have been the country retreat of one of the first Incas. Its three-storey houses, extensive niched walls, large central square, three metre high terraces and hidden location make this one of the real gems of the Cusco area.
Passing through the ruins you will arrive at your camp for the night, set close by in a small village. Your camping crew will have camp set up leaving you free to grab a cup of tea and sit and watch as local life unfolds before your eyes, high above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, much as it has done for hundreds of years.
Included: lunch, dinner,, transport, entrance fees, camping equipment (except sleeping bag)
After breakfast you explore the ruins in the company of your expert guide. You will probably have this impressive site entirely to yourself.
When ready, you move off once more for the two to three hours trek out to the community of Tauco located on the banks of Lake Piuray, where your vehicle will be waiting.
Included: breakfast, lunch, transport
