Your support vehicle will set up a picnic lunch before you carry on to the town of Pisac. Famous for its artisan market this is a great place to buy souvenirs which you can transport in the support vehicle.

Summary
  • Gear Up & Ride: Get equipped with full-suspension mountain bikes, helmets, and gloves, then ride downhill from Cusco to Huambutio for your first Peruvian mountain biking experience along the Urubamba River.
  • Scenic Ride & Picnic: Enjoy a scenic ride with negligible ascent and a 400m descent over 54km, culminating in a picnic lunch set up by your support vehicle.
  • Pisac Market: Continue to the town of Pisac, famous for its artisan market, a perfect spot to buy souvenirs which can be transported in the support vehicle.

From Pisac, you drive up into barren Altiplano to a pass at 4100m. Here you begin another day of mountain biking in Peru with a great descent to the small village of Paucartambo, with spectacular views of the surrounding Andes. There are a few optional single track trails available en route if you have enough mountain biking experience.

In Paucartambo you hop back on the support vehicle and drive to the edge of the Manu National Park and the Tres Cruces campsite. Famous for spectacular views of the Amazon jungle stretched out below, it seesf a spectacular sunrise phenomenon in June and July.

Summary
  • Altiplano Descent: From Pisac, drive to a 4100m Altiplano pass and begin a spectacular 45km mountain biking descent (1200m total descent) to the village of Paucartambo, with optional single-track trails for experienced riders.
  • Tres Cruces Campsite: From Paucartambo, transfer by vehicle to the Tres Cruces campsite on the edge of Manu National Park. This site is famous for its panoramic views of the Amazon jungle and a unique sunrise phenomenon in June and July.

Rising early and weather permitting, you enjoy a spectacular sunrise over the rainforest. At certain times of the year, the refracting sun rays bounce off the jungle below, creating a truly amazing spectacle.

Back on the mountain bikes, you start with a fun 16km ride along the final ridge of the Andes, before dropping off the edge of the Amazon basin for the descent into the amazing Manu cloud forest.

It is downhill mountain biking all day, surrounded by spectacular jungle views and hopefully glimpsing rare wildlife en route. Andean bears, pumas, various species of monkey and hundreds of birds have all been sighted on this same trip. You camp at the small jungle hamlet of San Pedro.

Summary
  • Sunrise & Mountain Biking: Rise early for a spectacular rainforest sunrise (weather permitting). Then, enjoy a thrilling 16km mountain bike ride along the Andes’ ridge before beginning a continuous downhill descent into the stunning Manu cloud forest.
  • Jungle Descent & Wildlife: Spend the day mountain biking 64km (with 160m ascent and 2700m descent) through spectacular jungle, hoping to spot rare wildlife like Andean bears, pumas, monkeys, and diverse bird species.
  • Jungle Camping: Camp overnight at the small jungle hamlet of San Pedro.

Continuing on downhill you enter the rainforest and pass various small villages, where you can see how settlers try to eke out a living in this hostile environment.

Stopping along the way for cold drinks and a chance to cool off in pristine jungle streams, you eventually reach Atalaya: the gateway to Manu. Here is where the tour ends and you either continue your journey into the Manu National Park and one of its lodges or return to Cusco, arriving late in the evening to be dropped off at your hotel.

Summary
  • Amazing Downhill trail to Atalaya where you can catch boats that go deep into a jungle lodge.

Well planned, superbly guided and supported

I want to add a more personal note of thanks for a fantastic holiday. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, I thought it was well planned, superbly guided and supported by the camp crew. The four main guides were excellent and fully up to the standard I have become used to. Diego did a great job of keeping a very mixed group of cyclists safe and happy and although personally, I was hoping for a bit of single track, the mostly gravel roads allowed for some lovely free-flowing riding and enabled us to look at the scenery without too much risk of becoming part of it! I still can’t believe I rode downhill for a whole day descending around 8,000 feet! If I were to change anything about the first week I would skip the second night in the Amazon Lodge in favour of some more riding. For the second week, Jose did an equally good job. His knowledge and his pride in the history and heritage of the area really brought the trek to life. I enjoyed his sense of humour and his ‘half-minutes.’ Thank you also for instantly converting everything from metres to feet just for me. I enjoyed the un-spoilt open trails mixed with the final historic route from KM104 up to the Sun Gate. What a great way to get the first view of Machu Picchu and to enter it as most visitors were going. I’m pleased I did this mixed week rather than just the ‘classic’ historic Inca Trail. I couldn’t believe I was walking at over 14,000 feet and feeling so good! if I would suggest anything to change it would possibly be to try and plan to return to Cusco straight after lunch and have a final evening as a group. Incidentally, full marks to Jose for sorting out the problem with the train so quickly and efficiently. Check out David’s adventure, the incredible experience of cycling and exploring the Sacred Valley by bike with an Amazon add on.

The terrain was fantastic, we did 3 runs on the half-day and had a great time! We could not have asked for anything more – Thank you very much. We will recommend the company highly to friends who visit in the future. Maybe come back ourselves. We were wishing we had more time on the bikes when we finished!!!
