If you are looking for a totally off-the-beaten-track cross-country mountain bike adventure, then Wacrapucara by bike is the trip for you!
Roughly 3 hours drive from Cusco at around 4000m, we leave our vehicle at the road head above Pitumarca and follow an ancient trail past deep lakes, heading toward the Apurimac canyon and our goal, the rarely visited “Horned Fortress” of Wacrapucara, perched on the side of a 3000m deep canyon.
The trail is mainly undulating, climbing to over 4100m before enjoying a spectacular descent into the Apurimac canyon and the ruins themselves. Here we stop and explore these amazing Inca ruins, enjoy our packed lunch and load up with water for the rest of our ride.
The trail out to Ccampi is mainly flat with short sharp, lung-busting climbs and superb single-track downhills as we traverse the Apurimac canyon, passing ancient petriglifs and burial tombs. The final descent into the small village of Ccampi is a challenging set of steps and twisty turny trail that will test all your skills.
Here we meet our vehicle and head back to Cusco after a full day of epic mountain bike adventuring. This is Peru wild biking at its very best indeed!
You do need to be fully acclimatised and an experienced off-road mountain bike rider before attempting this trip.
