Km 104: One or Two Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

overview

Hike the One or Two Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

The KM104 Inca Trail to Machu Picchu can be done over a one or two day hike. It’s the perfect alternative to the 5-day Inca Trail for those who are short on time and still want to hike into Machu Picchu.

The one day Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu sees an early start and a same-day return to Cusco. Alternatively, for those with a little more time to explore the magnificent citadel the 2 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu sees travellers spending a night in Machu Picchu Pueblo. In the two-day Inca Trail explorers will return the next day for a more in-depth look of Machu Picchu, with the option to climb one of the peaks (Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu) before returning to Cusco in the late afternoon.

Both the one and two day Inca Trail hikes, are truly fantastic ways to see Machu Picchu. By choosing the km104 trek over the train you will see more nature and Inca sites than if you take the train, as well as being surrounded by fewer people, and of course, you will be following in the footsteps of the Incas themselves. The one day Inca Trail hike starts at KM104, or Chachamba as the locals call it. KM104 refers to the distance along the train line from Cusco. The route climbs to the Wiñay Wayna ruins before contouring the hillside, through the Sun Gate and into Machu Picchu.

The one-day Inca Trail is not technically difficult and should be achievable to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. The hike begins with around 200 meters uphill before the path winds around the side of the mountain. There is a total of 550m ascension and 250m descent over the day. Both the one-day Inca Trail and the Two-day Inca Trail are suitable for kids aged about 8 years upwards. The hike is 12km in distance and takes about between 5 and 6 hours for most people. Altitude sickness should not be an issue as the maximum height is 2650m/8700ft. This is lower than the Sacred Valley and much lower than Cusco.

Pick up from hotel, train to KM104- the start of the one day Inca Trail- hike to Winay Wayña

You will be picked up from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley and transferred to the train station. From here you will enjoy a train to the KM104 starting point, and after passing through the control point, you are ready to begin your short Inca Trail.

The first Inca site you will pass will be Chachabamba, shortly after which comes to the ascension through beautiful cloud forest before arriving at Wiñay Wayna. After exploring this ancient site you will climb ancient Inca stairwells through terraces, exploring water features and buildings of times gone by.
From here, the most beautiful section of the entire Inca Trail takes over. Lush vegetation flanks you on either side. The scent of wild orchids fills the air. And all around you, brightly colored songbirds fill your ears with song.

Soon you will reach a final set of stairs to arrive at Inti Punku, better known as the Sun Gate. As you step through the old stone gateway, Machu Picchu unfolds before your eyes. Those who chose the one-day Inca Trail will explore the ancient citadel as much as their tired legs will allow, before taking the bus down to Aguas Calientes and taking the train back to Cusco.

Those who chose the two-day Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu will travel to Aguas Calientes below, where they can enjoy a hot shower and delicious meal before a well-deserved rest.

Summary
  • Hike Start: Begin your 1-day Inca Trail with a train ride to KM104, the starting point.
  • Ancient Sites & Scenery: Ascend through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna, then trek along the most beautiful section of the trail, surrounded by lush vegetation and orchids.
  • Machu Picchu Reveal: Reach Inti Punku (Sun Gate) for a spectacular view of Machu Picchu. Explore the citadel before taking a bus to Aguas Calientes and a train back to Cusco.
  • Packing: Only a daypack is needed for the 1-day trail.

After a comfortable night, you take the bus back up to explore Machu Picchu with your guide. You have time to hike to the Inca Bridge or Watchman’s hut or to wander through the ruins and soak up the atmosphere. If you have the energy you could even take on one of the peaks- be it Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu.

In the afternoon you enjoy one of the world’s great train journeys along the Sacred Valley to your hotel.

Summary
  • Machu Picchu Exploration: After a comfortable night, take the bus back up to Machu Picchu for further guided exploration. Hike to the Inca Bridge or Watchman’s Hut, or opt to climb Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu.
  • Scenic Train Journey: In the afternoon, enjoy a great train journey along the Sacred Valley back to your hotel.

See What Past Travelers Have to Say

I will be recommending Amazonas Explorer to any friends or family I have coming to Peru

My parents just left to fly back home and I will be leaving later tonight and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the amazing trip we had in Cusco, Ollantaytambo, and of course Machu Picchu! All of our guides and drivers were so helpful and informative. My parents mentioned multiple times how comforting and stress free it was to have Carlos making sure they were able to get from Cusco to MP town to meet up with Xavier and me.  I especially wanted to shout out Xavier! The KM104 hike was perfect and his guiding for me and my parents on Machu Picchu was so super informative and very helpful and understanding of my parents being older. For example, he made sure that my mom was able to have trekking poles for the ruins and my mom really felt like they were critical for her being able to complete the circuit. While I hope I will be able to be back to Peru, I’m pretty sure for my parents this will be their one and only time and I’m very thankful that they had such and enjoyable and comfortable yet adventurous experience. Thank you! I will be recommending Amazonas Explorer to any friends or family I have coming to Peru.

Thanks so much for taking such good care of them

I just wanted to take a moment to say I have just spoken with Mrs. C about their Peru trip and one of the things she raved about most was all the Amazonas guides they had, she said they were all absolutely brilliant, really switched on and just got them. They absolutely loved doing the Km 104 trek (and the guide switched around the grumpy daughter in just 5 mins) and was so pleased they did things this way and they were happy just taking the train back that evening, she says they didn’t even spend that long in the ruins (she had been there 20 years before when it was obviously a lot less busy!) She said you have a brilliant set up and she couldn’t have been more complimentary about you guys. Thanks so much for taking such good care of them and hasta pronto! Check out Karen’s adventure, the historical KM104 hike into Machu Picchu, and see the famous ruins through the sun gate for yourself.

A wonderful life experience, I will remember it for always

Our guide Juan Carlos Salazar is a wonderful man. We connected well, he was very polite, personable, extremely helpful, and attentive to our needs. Pedro the chef was fantastic and the other meals were all tasty and healthy. All equipment was in good shape and well functioning and the complimentary water bottle was a nice treat- quality and unique bottle. We loved the quiet hikes with very few people around, the views were spectacular, the crew was great, the km104 Inca Trail approach to Macchu Picchu was very special and the Lares thermal baths were so relaxing. It was a wonderful life experience, I will remember it always. Check out Eric’s adventure, the hike to Machu Picchu with in-depth cultural experiences as well as passing through the gateway to Machu Picchu, the Lares Trek with KM104.

Well planned, superbly guided and supported

I want to add a more personal note of thanks for a fantastic holiday. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, I thought it was well planned, superbly guided and supported by the camp crew. The four main guides were excellent and fully up to the standard I have become used to. Diego did a great job of keeping a very mixed group of cyclists safe and happy and although personally, I was hoping for a bit of single track, the mostly gravel roads allowed for some lovely free-flowing riding and enabled us to look at the scenery without too much risk of becoming part of it! I still can’t believe I rode downhill for a whole day descending around 8,000 feet! If I were to change anything about the first week I would skip the second night in the Amazon Lodge in favour of some more riding. For the second week, Jose did an equally good job. His knowledge and his pride in the history and heritage of the area really brought the trek to life. I enjoyed his sense of humour and his ‘half-minutes.’ Thank you also for instantly converting everything from metres to feet just for me. I enjoyed the un-spoilt open trails mixed with the final historic route from KM104 up to the Sun Gate. What a great way to get the first view of Machu Picchu and to enter it as most visitors were going. I’m pleased I did this mixed week rather than just the ‘classic’ historic Inca Trail. I couldn’t believe I was walking at over 14,000 feet and feeling so good! if I would suggest anything to change it would possibly be to try and plan to return to Cusco straight after lunch and have a final evening as a group. Incidentally, full marks to Jose for sorting out the problem with the train so quickly and efficiently. Check out David’s adventure, the incredible experience of cycling and exploring the Sacred Valley by bike with an Amazon add on.

We felt safe, cared for and respected.

Dimetrio our porter was excellent, very friendly, and respectful: Julio the driver was friendly and safe. We only did the hike from km104 but it was perfect in every way.  His unbelievable knowledge and respect for the culture and history really made it a perfect trip. The 1-day hike was challenging in parts, as expected, but Chino always made sure we were safe and happy. Every part was perfect. Winay Wayna Sungate and Machu Picchu were all mind-blowing. Thank you Chino for making my wife’s 50th birthday the best ever and showing my sons a perfect example of a passionate and hard worker. We would rate your service as excellent

The scope of the service it’s as complete as it can be. You joined us from the very beginning of the activity (the previous day chat) until the check-in in the last hotel. It’s helpful but not oppressing. The activity itself is unforgettable. Well balanced, not exhausting, never boring, and with enough content. Of course, the incredible landscape plays its role! The guide (Jaime) it’s perfect for the activity. Well prepared, with a wide range of conversation and explanations about the whole trek. Helpful, funny, and familiar. Congratulations on that. So, in general, we would rate your service as excellent. Thank you, and wish you great success! Check out Seth’s adventure, the one of a kind KM104 (Inca Trail) leading explorers into the world-famous Machu Picchu.
