Apurimac Rafting: Black Canyon (2 days)

overview

Peru wilderness rafting at its best

This is a fantastic two-day wilderness rafting adventure for those short on time. If however you are really pushed for time, you could choose a shorter one-day version of the trip, taking in the second day only but you do miss the lovely beach camps and beautiful views of the milky way. The two day Apurimac allows you to go deep into the wilderness with no one around having the beaches and rapids all to yourself. By doing the two apurimac you get to have lots of fun on class 3 and 4 rapids.

You head out from Cusco for the spectacular drive to the Apurimac canyon, hopefully glimpsing en route the snow-capped Vilcanota mountain range before descending into the canyon to start your Apurimac rafting adventure.

Here your guides will inflate your rafts and load them up with provisions for the journey ahead. Following a full safety talk and instruction in the art of white water rafting, you cast off into the Black Canyon of the Apurimac.

For the next two days you enjoy some of the least visited, but in our opinion best Peru rafting.

The river enters a truly impressive steep-sided gorge where you run many excellent class III and IV rapids. In between the rapids, there are relaxing floats through breath-taking scenery. You also have the opportunity to get out and explore waterfalls and colonial bridges.

At night you camp on a deserted beach and enjoy great food, a few drinks and great camaraderie around the campfire.

Summary
  • Two-day rafting expedition through the dramatic Black Canyon of the Apurimac.
  • Combines thrilling class III–IV rapids with calm scenic floats and riverside exploration.
  • Includes expert guides, full rafting and camping equipment, meals, and transport.
Insider knowledge

This remote section of the Apurimac River is rarely visited, making it a true wilderness adventure. Nights spent on deserted beaches under the stars create a memorable expedition feel, while the canyon itself reveals hidden waterfalls and colonial-era bridges few travelers ever see.

More great Apurimac rafting today. Depending on water levels there may be the odd portage between the fun rapids. There are also stretches to just sit and float down the river and enjoy being in this fantastic location.

Keep an eye out as you go for Andean Foxes, Torrent Ducks, otters and even Condors.

Finally, you reach a break in the canyon walls in time for lunch. From here it is a four to five-hour drive back to Cusco, with views of the towering snow-capped Salkantay Mountain along the way.

Summary
  • Continue navigating exciting rapids and scenic calm stretches of the Apurimac River.
  • Wildlife spotting opportunities include Andean foxes, Torrent ducks, otters, and condors.
  • Return to Cusco after lunch with stunning views of the Salkantay massif.
Insider knowledge

This second day of rafting allows you to fully appreciate the canyon’s wild ecosystem, with the chance to see rare wildlife along the river. The gradual transition from the rugged gorge to the open landscape makes for a spectacular finale to this unforgettable whitewater adventure.

Two Day Black Canyon Rafting Trip is a must do!

We went on the 2 day Black Canyon rafting trip and had the best time! This was our first overnight rafting trip so we had no idea what to expect, but our experience was far superior to what I could have imagined! Neil picked us up from our Airbnb and took us to the river. He recommended quick stops to take pictures of the beautiful landscape on the way to the river. Once at the river the team had everything ready to go! We had such a good time with Neil! There were two other guides, one guiding our gear boat and another on a kayak to be there in case someone fell out or needed help. It was clear they love their job! They were so fun to hang out with. They had picked out a great place for our campsite! It was serious glamping! They provided everything we needed! We had so much food it was impossible to eat it all! They cooked us an amazing dinner and we had awesome food throughout the entire trip! The rapids were also a blast! If you have a GoPro mount bring it! They have the base of the mount at the front of the raft. Neil made sure we got some great pictures! They had everything down to the last detail and we couldn’t have been better taken care of. They made sure we were safe, comfortable, and had fun the entire time. I can’t recommend this company enough! Check out Katherine’s adventure, our Two Day Black Canyon Rafting Trip, here.

the professionalism of the operation and the high quality of both equipment and personnel was fantastic

I can report that we were very impressed. Of course, the canyon and the river sell themselves: spectacular scenery and a lovely time to go in May when everything is so green. But the professionalism of the operation and the high quality of both equipment and personnel were fantastic. It all ran so smoothly and was very slick. Everything from the careful driving to the expert piloting of the raft: we felt totally safe and had complete confidence in the raft. Santiago is a gem of a guide, and the two Victors were also very conscientious.  We were amazed by their skills: not only on the water but also creating such an enjoyable experience on the beaches: everything was set up for us quickly, and they are also very competent chefs. Extraordinary to have pisco sours created in a wind-up liquidizer, and a full English breakfast! The kit, from tents to tables and chairs, sleeping bags, etc, was top-notch. (The Number 2 loo tent perhaps not necessary: we’d have been quite happy to go natural and scoop it into a bag with a bit of lime and pop it into a little box…) I just hope Ed Sheeran enjoyed it as much as we did! Thanks again to everyone. Check out Claire’s adventure, our Two Day Apurimac Canyon Rafting Trip, here.

Cindy Nguyen

Hi Dougie, We just got back from our rafting trip, and it was amazing! We all had a fantastic time and did not want to get out of the raft; it was so much fun! The scenery was breathtakingly beautiful.  The guides were knowledgeable, patient and a joy to be with. Lunch was delicious and well prepared. We enjoyed ourselves very much and would highly recommend Amazonas Explorer.  Thank you again for organising and setting this up. We are also loving the privacy and hospitality of the Urubamba Villas. Check out Cindy’s adventure, our Two-Day Black Canyon Rafting Trip, here.
